A new campus is taking shape for the Siemens technology group in the south of Erlangen. Due for completion in 2030, it will feature modern, sustainable offices, research and laboratory buildings, and apartments on a site measuring just under 540,000 square meters (equivalent to 75 football fields). On May 11, 2016, Erlangen City Council approved the land-use plan for the first two modules. Drees & Sommer is supporting this construction of one of the biggest Siemens sites worldwide by providing project management services, building site logistics, and Green Building certification of the new buildings.
The new Siemens Erlangen Campus will be built according to the design and the plans of KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten, Frankfurt, on the previously private Siemens research site in the south of the city. Offices, apartments, laboratories and research facilities – as well as a hotel with conference rooms – will be built for approximately 14,000 employees. Green spaces and outdoor areas, along with food & beverage outlets, round out the picture. The building interiors will feature modern office environments with open-plan layouts and flexible workplaces. The groundbreaking ceremony for the campus is scheduled for the end of this year, and the first construction stage, scheduled for completion in 2020, involves several office buildings and multistorey car parks. During the process, a large proportion of the established buildings will gradually be replaced by new buildings, with the necessary infrastructure being built at the same time.
Drees & Sommer is supporting the principal with this major construction project, with project managers assuming responsibility for cost, schedule, and quality control. The experts will also provide support for Green Building certification of the buildings. The goal is to achieve LEED v4.0 Gold certification for all new buildings on the Siemens campus, with 14 buildings of the first two modules to be certified to this standard. LEED v4. 0 involves a significant increase in sustainability requirements, while at the same time addressing the special nature of the campus situation. In the course of the project, products and services are being selected to minimize resource consumption, environmental impact, and emissions.
